The University’s Family Planning Research Group (FPRG) is multi-disciplinary and intensely collaborative. Current projects include joint efforts with members from other divisions in:

  • The Department of Ob/Gyn
  • The Department of Internal Medicine,
  • The College of Nursing,
  • The Department of Population Health Sciences
  • The Department of Sociology.

These existing collaborations create ample opportunities to blend different perspectives in the pursuit of answers to important questions in the field. This group has been extremely productive in engaging quantitative and qualitative techniques to address a wide variety of issues in Family Planning.

In addition, we are actively involved with several other family planning research sites nationwide including our work through the NICHD Contraceptive Clinical Trials Network as well with efforts with:

  • The University of New Mexico
  • The University of Wisconsin
  • The University of Michigan
  • The University of California at San Francisco

Research With the Utah Population Database (UPDB)

The State of Utah and the University have several established programs to facilitate Family Planning research.

The Utah Population Database (UPDB) is a statewide resource that contains health outcomes and utilization information on several generations and detailed content on recent health events of all Utah residents.  The UPD gives Utah researchers a distinctive advantage in conducting epidemiologic research. Family planning researchers have employed this formidable resource to investigate a wide range of issues including the prevalence of contraceptive use among women with medical complexities and the relationship between highly effective contraception and preterm births.

University Family Planning Faculty are involved at the national level with ACOG where Dr. Gawron is a member of the scientific review committee and Physicians for Reproductive Health where Dr. Turok is a current Board member.
